On the Friday before Memorial Day, wear a red poppy to honor the fallen and support the living who have worn our nation's uniform. Stop by the post to get your poppy and wear it proudly this Memorial Day Weekend.

The red poppy is a nationally recognized symbol of sacrifice worn by Americans since World War I to honor those who served and died for our country in all wars. It reminds Americans of the sacrifices made by our veterans while protecting our freedoms. On Sept. 27, 1920, the poppy became the official flower of the American Legion Family to memorialize the soldiers who fought and died during the war. In 1924, the distribution of poppies became a national program of The American Legion. Read more about the poppy.

August 7 - Purple Heart Day. Remembering America's Veterans - special recognition for Purple Heart recipients

Palmetto Bay became the first South Florida "Purple Heart City" in 2016 - as per resolution 2016-40 that I was proud to sponsor as Mayor of Palmetto Bay.  It remains important to continue this recognition.

This is a national day of recognition. Purple Heart Day is observed on August 7 each year and is a time for Americans to pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who were either wounded on the battlefield or paid the ultimate sacrifice with their lives.

Remembering America's Veterans - those who earned the Purple Heart.

Important memories and celebrations that should be recognized at home, if we cannot safely join together during this pandemic.

Another great event.

I am proud of Eagle Scout candidate Tyler Benjamin, his family, his scout troop, and our American Legion, Post 133. Great ceremony ceremonies were held last night - first to formally kick of completion of the flag retirement boxes (located at Coral Reef and Ludovici Parks) and then a flag burning ceremony. I was pleased to participate, both through official recognition on behalf of the Village Council of Palmetto Bay and then by personal participation in the retirement of the flag that had flown at my home. A representative of our Village police was present as were members of American Legion, Post 133. This flag retirement ceremony was another great family event, another thread woven, here in Palmetto Bay.

I am a longtime member of scouting, having been a scout since elementary school, participating in scout leadership and having my daughters excel in scouting. I love Palmetto Bay and I love Scouting - strengthening our community.

Great community project at the American Legion. Thank you to The Home Depot & Team.

Service to our community. A great start to the long holiday weekend.  Work at the American Legion, Marlin Moore, Post 133, in Palmetto Bay.

I want to personally and officially thank The Home Depot, Store #207: the Manager Tony Villaneuva and associate team.  It was my honor to join into the work and present a proclamation of thanks for The Home Depot service.

It was a great day of service.  Councilman David Singer left his office early to join in and provide some hard labor - as well as a personal donation - Go David Singer!

Are you available to help serve on Friday, August 31? American Legion is seeking volunteers. Thank you to The Home Depot

Please consider this our opportunity to help serve those who have served us.

A call to volunteers.  Work is currently going on at the American Legion Hall, Marlin Moore Post 133 in Palmetto Bay. The American Legion post is looking for volunteers to assist this Friday, August 31, beginning at 8:00 AM.  Are you available to help or know someone else who can?

 

I met with Homer, David and Danny, - they are Store Key Holders from Home Depot, Store #207, 19400 SW 106th Ave, Cutler Bay on Monday, August 27, 2018.  They updated me on the project along with Post Commander William Richards.

Officially, this is a big Palmetto Bay Thank You to The Home Depot – which has a "honoring our veterans" program, through which The Home Depot is providing a grant of $13,500 plus an army of volunteers – several working throughout this week, but Friday is the big day when the call goes out for “all hands on deck.” 30 Home Depot employees are expected to participate at once on Friday, August 31. 

This is our opportunity to get engaged in this community project and provide some service for those who served for us.

What    :             Volunteering for the American Legion, Marlin Moore Post 133 in Palmetto Bay. 16401 SW 90th Ave (American Legion Way), Palmetto Bay, Florida 33157

When   :             Friday, August 31, 2018, beginning at 8:00 AM (or as soon as you can make it).

Needs   :             Painting, sweeping, (generally policing the area) - working with shrubbery.

   There are many duties that they could use assistance. Dress to get dirty.

Special Note for Students - Community Service Hours available: Work is going on all week.  The American Legion Post can provide verification for Student Community Service hours after school, but project ends each day at approximately 6:00 PM.

Passing of an American Hero, WWII combat veteran, Purple Heart recipient Alvin Siegel. My condolences

Sad passing - a true American hero, WWII combat veteran, Purple Heart recipient Alvin Siegel.  A long time resident of Palmetto Bay.  It was my honor to get to know both Alvin and spouse Ofelia.  I got to know them both at the YMCA.  As you would expect from a Marine, they were part of the first arrival group, often there waiting for the doors to open at 5:15 AM. 

Officially, as Mayor, I want to express our sincere condolences on behalf of our Palmetto Bay community to Ofelia, his entire family, fellow service members, fellow Legion Post members and Palmetto Bay community.

Marine  Siegel was a frequent participant in Village Veteran events, including the Palmer Veterans Day breakfasts.  Marine Siegel participated in the 'recognition day' ,Sunday, August 7, 2016, was the annual Purple Heart Day.  The special day that Palmetto Bay was officially recognized as a "Purple Heart City". Related post - August 12, 2016, Recognizing our Purple Heart Awardees. Palmetto Bay is now a Purple Heart City! 

Marine Al received his Purple Heart for wounds received in action at Iwo Jima.

I was told he later received a field commission after this action.

He is a member of the American Legion, Post 133

I want to express our sincere condolences to his family, fellow service members, fellow Legion Post members and Palmetto Bay community. 

 May his memory be eternal.

Dear Fellow Palmetto Bay resident,

July 4, 1776, the date our county's founders declared our independence from Britain, the date we marks as the day that American Democracy was born. There are many great neighborhood and regional events going on (some including Mangowood and American Legion Post 133 are listed below) so plan ahead, have fun and stay safe!

This is a holiday to celebrate, the day we celebrate the birth of our great nation, the creation of the greatest system of freedom and democracy. All of this occurred due to the great physical and financial sacrifice of the founders of this nation, the brave men and women of yesterday and today who have sacrificed so greatly to ensure the traditions bestowed by our remarkable founders. We owe them vigilance, and the willingness to defend the democracy they have passed on to us.

Independence Day has been celebrated since 1776.  But do you know the year that July 4 was officially made a Federal Holiday?  Would you believe 1941? Check out the  History.com page regarding July 4, for additional information.

Let us continue to look to a future that belongs to all of us - a future that 'we, the people' have the power to create.

I wish you all a wonderful holiday, and hope that the day's happiness reminds us all of the importance of the Fourth of July.

Independence Day celebration in Palmetto Bay

Palmetto Bay is the place to celebrate the Fourth of July

Mangowood

The Mangowood Community is once again hosting its annual July 4th Celebration. 

This event is held at SW 152 St / SW 148 Drive in the Village of Palmetto Bay. 

A military flyover has been approved and is anticipated to take place between 10:30 and 11:30. 

I make no guarantees about the flyover and precise time, but I suggest that you find a clear spot to view it between 11:00 and 11:15 .

AMERICAN LEGION, MARLIN MOORE POST 133, Palmetto Bay

The American Legion, Post 133 is hosting an Independence Day BBQ beginning at noon on July 4th. Members of the post will be serving Burgers, Hot Dogs and sides for lunch. 

Stop by in between other local events and say hi to your friends at the Legion!

Post 133 is located at 16401 SW 90th Ave, Palmetto Bay, FL 33157.

The members of the American Legion would like to continue to serve all of us.  Please stop by and share some 4th of July holiday spirit with our veterans.

MAYOR FLINN'S SPECIAL NOTE: The American Legion has been very accommodating and welcoming to our Palmetto Bay community. The membership of the American Legion has been working hard to raise money for a much needed roof.  The American Legion would appreciate donations to their building fund.  Contact me for more information, or the American Legion, Post 133, directly if you would like to donate/help.

I also want to publicly acknowledge and thank Council Member Singer and his family, along with Laurel Auberbacher, who purchase the food at their own personal expense as well as actually cook and serve breakfast every other Sunday at the American Legion (breakfast is served every Sunday), which serves as a fundraiser for the Post expenses, e.g., the building/roof fund. (CLICK HERE)

Breakfast runs in the $5-6 range. Breakfast, open to the public, runs on Sunday and is open it the public from 8:30 AM to 10 AM.
