I received the updated proposed code revisions and immediately forwarded them via an e-mail blast was provided immediately upon receipt from the Manager.

Reminder about the meetings I have set for this Friday. 

There are multiple opportunities for interested members of our community to view and participate.

Dear Fellow Palmetto Bay Resident,

I apologize for the second e-mail blast in a single day, but the revised proposed revisions to the DUV Code by Dover Kohl was provided after my mid-day e-blast release. I want to do my part to get these materials to you as early as possible for those who are planning on participating.

Significant work goes on between meetings. 

I am pleased that additional efforts and communications have resulted in the updated draft of the proposed Downtown Urban Village Code Revisions 

I remain proud in setting a standard for public participation.  I have been consistent and once again invite everyone to listen in/participate in my official briefing/meeting with the Dover Kohl Group, prior to the public meeting. This is my final reminder that this official meeting will take place at 2:00 PM on Friday, July 13th. Other separate meetings are set that same day with the other Village Council Members. The general meeting is set for early evening, 7:00 PM, the same date, July 13.

Dover Kohl Group's suggested changes to the DUV have been released to Village Council.

The suggested revisions to the DUV code arrived late this afternoon (Thursday, June 28, 2018).  

Palmetto Bay Manager Ed Silva has released the DUV code revision as proposed by the Dover Kohl Group.  The document is large as it contains graphics and, therefore had to be divided into 3 parts (with section 2 having parts A & B) due to its size, in order to be small enough to e-mailed to the council.  

I have asked for this document to be posted on line.

Staff is working at the present time to upload the complete package to the official village website.  This task may not be accomplished until near close of business day tomorrow, Friday, June 29, due to the size of the package.

I have asked that the Village Council Chambers be set up to be the site of this meeting to accommodate interested residents.

Being one of the few elected officials who has never met privately with a developer about a zoning matter, and meetings (and there has been only one), has been held in public. In fact, 3 out of 5 village council members have held such meetings in the public. I want to thank Council Members David Singer and Larissa Siegel Lara for doing what is right and joining me in increasing transparency here in Palmetto Bay.

The public trust is enhanced when important meetings are held in full view of the public - and with participation.

Communities coming together. County, Tri City Traffic Solutions Summit, held Saturday, February 3

Thank you Commissioner Levine Cava for hosting the County, Tri City Traffic Solutions Summit, on Saturday, February 3. This event brought together 4 Commissioners: Chair Esteban Bovo, Bruno Barreiro, Xavier Suarez, and Daniella Levine Cava, State Senator Jose Javier Rodriguez and State Representative Kionne McGhee - to name a few.  I joined with Mayor Peggy Bell of Cutler Bay and Mayor Joe Corradino of Pinecrest to co-host on behalf of the Palmetto Bay, Cutler Bay and Pinecrest communities - along with surrounding residents to help determine the best solutions to traffic congestion in the Pinecrest through Palmetto Bay, and Cutler Bay to Palm Glades (248th Street) Transportation Corridor. The participants came up with long term and short term solutions which will be published in a report.

Suggested solutions include:
* Build a connected pedestrian and (protected) bike network
* Evolve neighborhoods to be more mixed use
* Adopt the walk/bike 1 mile challenge
* Build bridges to transit way
* Strengthen bike/walk/transit advocacy
* Encourage more biking/walking/transit/car sharing to school
* Have flex time at work/work from home
* Use transit more often
* Build at-grade Metrorail south
* Use Municipal circulators/bikes/Uber/Lyft as first/last mile to transit
* Develop apps that reward carpool, transit, rideshare, etc

Participants heard from traffic experts, examined transportation improvement plans that are underway - including multiple Palmetto Bay Pilot Programs as well as having the opportunity to offer input on future plans.

The goal is to produce a realistic action plan to reduce traffic and hold each other accountable for real results. This is another step in the process. (CLICK HERE) to view some of the Palmetto Bay municipal traffic calming studies/master plans and materials.

Slide 7 (Above) - There’s a basic geometry problem to depending on cars for everything. They take too much space. In the picture on the left, you can see how much space it takes for a busload of

40 or 60 to occupy a bus or trolley. In the center picture, you can see how much space it
takes for the same number of us on bikes; slightly more. In the photo at right, you see what
happens when each person has a car. There will never be enough room.

Looking at slide 8 (above) - Here’s another way to visualize the same thing: 400 cars, versus 400 bus passengers, versus 400 people on a train.

Update, 7/20/2017 - 4:00 PM: Wednesday, July 19th, renowned architect & planner, Victor Dover presented his team's recommendations for updating the current Downtown Urban Village (DUV) code, which are now available online.   Download or view the DUV Assessment Report or the Powerpoint Presentation made to the Council during the Committee of the Whole meeting.
