Miami-Dade Minute - 2022 Bike To Work Day

Wednesday, March 9, 2022 - Mayor Daniella Levine Cava led the 10th Annual Bike305 Bike to Work Day, an event that encourages residents in all municipalities to ride a bicycle to work, school, and fun destinations for a healthy way to live life. The 2022 event was held in Miami Lakes. It was 6-mile police escorted bike ride from Miami Lakes Town Hall to Amelia Earhart Park.

Follow up - DTPW rejects request of the Palmetto Bay mayor and council: rejects the use of golf carts along the OCR (Old Cutler Road) shared use path.

Keeping you in the loop. Nothing has been reported from the village, but here is follow up, the rest of the story, of the resolution by the Village of Palmetto Bay to study the feasibility of allowing motorized golf carts to use the county's Old Cutler Trail, a shared use path. In short, the Miami-Dade County Transportation & Public Works Department (DTPW) issued this response: 

"The path is not designed or warranted for the use of golf carts. After reviewing the request DTPW does not recommend the use of golf carts along the OCR (Old Cutler Road) shared use path."

The DTPW specifically cited Florida Department of Transportation standards saying:

"...the conflicts between the golf carts and the shared use path users (pedestrian and bikers) would create significant safety and operational problems..."

Per the EBC Vice President / Executive Board Member posted on Facebook: 

“This is a big win for cyclists and pedestrians in Miami-Dade County. Thank you MDTPW for your wise decision!”

There has been no word whether the Palmetto Bay Policing unit will enforce the no motorized vehicle rule on the Shared Use Path (which is not a bike lane).

The 2021 Ride of Silence has returned to its live event format and will be held at the traditional location: the Crandon Park Marina Parking Lot, Rickenbacker Causeway, near the Village of Key Biscayne.

I am posting a wonderful family inclusive event. Bike305's: Bike the Wild Side at Zoo Miami is set for Saturday, July 18th (Check-in starting at 4:30 p.m. Ride starts at 6 p.m.). This installment offers a safe and enjoyable experience for guests, all while following CDC recommended guidelines.

Now is the time to request your tickets as this event always fills up fast – and there is a limited number of tickets for this family Bike305 'Bike the Wild Side' event at Zoo Miami.  Guided by the talented Zoo Miami staff, groups of 9 cyclists will be led on a leisurely ride around the zoo for approximately 3 miles. Each group will have the opportunity to stop and learn about the habits and habitats of some of the animals, with special appearances from life-sized animatronic dinosaurs. Don't miss this one of a kind opportunity to see Zoo Miami in a whole new way!

Are you ready? This event is a FREE (of charge) leader-led bike ride on paved, gravel and grass trails connecting two of South Florida's beautiful national parks:  Biscayne National Park and the Everglades National Park.  Ride all or part to see at least one of these great parks!

This ride offers 3 distances to choose from:
42 Miles - For Strong, Performance Cyclists (most of this route is on gravel & grass trails - tough!)
22 Miles - For Fit, Recreational Cyclists
14 Miles - For Casual Cyclists

Pace will depend on the group but groups usually break down to fast, moderate, and slower smaller groups.  You will not be left behind!

Yes, Florida is different from the rest of the nation. One such difference is Florida celebrates Bike Month in March. April is National Bike Month. The difference is due in large part to the fact that Florida enjoys year around bicycle weather.

Work begins to prepare for the 2020 Ride of Silence – hold the date – the 2020 International Ride of Silence is set for Wednesday, May 20th, 2020, 7:00 PM

This is a local event of a worldwide movement designed to raise awareness of cycling deaths, injuries and remembering those no longer with us, killed while riding. I continued to be inspired by the affected families as well as the bike community leaders that I'm proud to call my friends. 

The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph, wear helmets, follow the rules of the road and remain silent during the ride. There are no sponsors and no registration fees. The ride, which is held during National Bike Month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for and honor the lives of those who have been killed or injured.

Thank you to all the organizers, volunteers and participants who work hard to make this annual event possible.

There will be many more meetings and many other people involved in this event. Please contact me if you would like to participate and/or be involved in the preparation for this event. This is an international event that is held annually on the third Wednesday of May.

Bike on the Wild Side this Saturday, March 9th, at the Old Zoo at Crandon Park

March is Bike Month! There are many family friendly bike events ongoing.

The Old Zoo at Crandon Park is an intriguing place in Miami history and docents will tell you all about it on this twilight bike ride. Also, feel the ocean breeze as you ride up the beach boardwalk to the Nature Overlook to see the twinkling lights of downtown Miami. Can't miss this one! Register soon! Registration has been open since 02/14/2019 and will remain upon until 03/09/2019.

Saturday, October 17, 2015 - "Bike on The Bay" including a family bike ride from Black Point beginning at 8 AM to Miami-Dade County's Deering Estate where there will be a fun morning of activities scheduled up to noon.

A great start - the inaugural "Bike By The Bay" - Saturday, October 17, 2015 - The weekend of October 17 & 18 was a huge weekend for bike events with events going on in Coral Gables, Miami Beach, South Miami and south Miami-Dade.  Fear of projected poor weather fueled brief thoughts of cancellation, but sticking to the plan was rewarded with outstanding weather.  Hundreds got pumped up for the Oct. 17 road-sharing safety awareness event, "Bike on the Bay."  A fun morning of meeting up with friends and neighbors, riding along the Old Cutler Bike Trail, one of the most scenic places to ride a bike (or walk, job or simply take time to enjoy local nature).

November 15, 2015, Busy, rainy, event filled-weekend. WHEELS, DARE Art Festival pushed through the rain, Food & Rock cancelled

November 13, 14 & 15 was a very busy weekend impacted by rains all weekend.  The WHEELS Big Bash was forced to shut down early on Saturday due to torrential rain. A nice ride made very wet - the WHEEL Bike Train that stated/ended in South Miami, running down the South Dade Bike Trail, onto 168 Street, west through Larry & Penny Thompson Park, onto and south through the Black Creek Trail to Black Point then up through Cutler Bay, Palmetto Bay, and through Pinecrest on the Old Cutler Trail back to South Miami.  

November 20, 2015 - You are invited - Sunday, 11/22 Bike Ride - Palmetto Bay with District 8 County Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava and Mayor Eugene Flinn of Palmetto Bay.

Bike305 Bike the Wild Side - Zoo Miami event - Saturday, March 16 - a twilight bike ride through Zoo Miami

Time to get up close and personal with the animals at Zoo Miami!  The kids will love it - and so will the young at heart.

2019 Bike To Work Day - Friday, March 1st 2019 - first call - always a fun time. Presented by Bike 305

Try bike commuting for ONE day! Ride your bike and meet residents, along with Village Council, starting at Village Hall for a guided bike ride to celebrate Bike305's Bike to Work Day.

WHAT: Bike to Work Day 2019 - join your Palmetto Bay friends and neighbors.

WHEN: Friday, March 1, 2019

DETAILS:  (See full information posted on flyers above and at bottom) Participants will depart from the Village Hall Parking Lot at 6:45 am to head towards the Dadeland South Metro Rail Station. Upon arrival to the station you will learn how to take your bike on the Metrorail and then head to the full Bike 305 County Event where all of the Bike 305 festivities will take place.

All participating cyclists will receive a FREE Bike305 performance cycling t-shirt (at the event site), FREE one-way easy ticket on Metrorail (*limited quantities and must provide valid email address), FREE air & bike checks by Mack Cycle & Fitness and other goodies (while supplies last). Light refreshments and breakfast foods will be served at the event site.

Dead Serious: Miami-Dade District 8 Bicycle Safety Meeting | BikeSafe

I am committed to working within our communities to improve safety for every user. 

Bike lanes are just one example.  Bike lanes provide additional space for cars to maneuver safely and not get caught behind bikes.  Bicycles are less exposed to distracted drivers.

The law is clear: With the exception of a few types of high-speed, limited-access roadways (for example an Interstate Highway or the Turnpike), every FDOT travel lane is also a bikeway - no special signs or markings needed. In the state of Florida, the bicycle is considered a legal vehicle and may be operated on the street, unless there is some guidance otherwise, such as marked bicycle lane. The exception is the Mandatory Bike Lane Law: Since 2010, Florida law specifies that if there is a lane marked for bicycle use, then cyclists must ride in that lane except for defined exceptions. 

Bike lanes are therefore win/win. Safer place to ride, and re-opens the road to motorists.

On Friday, May 18, it was my privilege to represent Palmetto Bay in the first meeting of County Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava's "Dead Serious" campaign.

Pinecrest, Cutler Bay and Palmetto Bay were present through elected officials and concerned residents who participated with Miami-Dade County, district 8. Miami-Dade County Parks, TPO, Bike 305, Everglades Bike Club, FDOT, Police and UM. Everyone working together.

Great collaboration & commitment to pedestrian and cycling safety. We’re creating an action plan for more education, infrastructure, enforcement and uniformity. #DeadSerious #VisionZero #completestreets #community
