Interesting read in the May 6, 2013, USA TODAY:
As more states draw the line on texting while driving, only about one citation is issued per day, on average, by Larry Copeland,
USA TODAY
The Florida Legislature just approved a
ban on texting while driving, though no word from Governor Scott as to what
action he will take on the bill. Florida
is ready to become the 40th state to enact such a law (plus the District of Columbia). Washington state started the trend in
2007.
A USA TODAY survey of state police
agencies reports that a driver stands little chance of getting ticketed for
texting by state police in most of the nation, with some state agencies
averaging fewer than one citation per day.
The article ends with Justin McNaull,
director of state relations for auto club AAA and a former Arlington, Va.,
police officer, "Ultimately, the goal of traffic laws and traffic
enforcement isn't to write a certain number of tickets. It's to change
behavior. It's to discourage people from engaging in dangerous behavior."
Obviously there will be no effect in
Florida if Governor Scott vetoes the anti-texting bill.
