Bees plan on working through the weekend. Our Dombeya Seminole plant is "abuzz". POD

Here is my picture of the day. A composite of 4 of the best photos I was able to take today. Bees are not known for cooperating for photos, though they did not seem to mind my presence.  A nice part of the time change is having additional sunlight later in the day to enable some after hours garden time.

This has been a nice day for the local bees - it seems like hundreds are having a field day on our Dombeya Seminole, which is also commonly called the Florida hydrangea. I found the entire plant to bee abuzz.  Overall, I'd rate this Dombeya Seminole a solid "Bee+" for attracting honey bees.

I assume that these bees also spend significant time pollinating the many varieties of Mango trees in the yard. I may have a good crop this year, so stay tuned as to plans for giving away the excess come June.

Nice to see the local bees here doing their job.  There are times when the bush itself sounds like it is buzzing due to the large numbers of bees this plant attracts.

Plant native. Enjoy our local environment.

Have a happy and productive weekend (if those two go together for you).

Palmetto Bay Garden Club at work - what goes up, must come down. Deering Holiday decoration removal day.

Our Palmetto Bay Garden Club (PBGC) breaks down the Holiday Decorations at the Deering Estate early Saturday morning, January 6, 2018.  Thank you Garden Club Members for all you do to make Palmetto Bay green and adding to the holiday spirit.

Palmetto Bay is blessed to have a wonderful Garden Club.  The Palmetto Bay Garden Club, Inc, was founded August 2009. I am proud to have been a early proponent of this club and to remain as a dues paying member (family membership) to this day.
(above left and right - I am thankful for the PBGC, for their service to our community
I was hoping to help with the "heavy lifting, but they had things well under control)
Members of the PBGC are responsible for many of the green projects throughout the Village.  The Holiday Decs at Deering is just one of many examples of their projects - community leaders gathering and working to make our Palmetto Bay a better place to live work., play and be educated.
Here are some photos of the tree decs at the 2017 Deering Holiday event - annual Festival of Trees:

A big 'THANK YOU" to our Palmetto Bay Garden Club!

Your Mayor (and PBGC member),

Eugene Flinn

BTW, love to see how members of our PBGC traveled to Deering for the event:

Update on FREE Irma mulch - available for Palmetto Bay residents Saturday - October 28th at Coral Reef Park

FREE Irma Mulch.  I am pleased that I can finally announce that freshly ground mulch*, courtesy of Irma, will be available on Saturday, October 28, 2017, at Coral Reef Park.  There have been many inquiries about when this mulch would be made available.   We ask that Palmetto Bay residents come with their photo IDs, pick up free mulch, and spread our special Palmetto Bay-made mulch back onto their home gardens.
You can take home part of Palmetto Bay's 'mulch mountain' beginning Sat 10/28

Please watch this space/blog for further updates, including modifications.

The plan at the present time is for the mulch pick up to be on at the parking lot east of the tennis courts (where the Farmer's Market is held on Sundays (enter from Coral Reef Drive).  The mulch will be available for pick up beginning at 9:00 AM. The current plan is that Palmetto Bay will supply the garbage bags to carry the mulch.  This free giveaway is limited to Palmetto Bay residents, so don't forget to bring your photo ID.
The mulch would be better suited in your home landscaping than at a County landfill.

Please watch this blog and/or follow/like my Eugene Flinn, Mayor, Facebook page for updates on this and other events affecting Palmetto Bay.

Your Mayor,

Eugene Flinn

* DISCLAIMER: Please note that this is raw ground mulch, not commercially prepared and treated mulch. This mulch is locally sourced, grown entirely within the Village of Palmetto Bay.

Small Town USA - Warrensburg's Community Garden

It is always interesting to see what is going on in Small Town USA.  My ongoing research and comparing notes while on vacation.  Part of my personal process to bringing best practices and updated ideas on making things work best for our residents home to Palmetto Bay.

Things I like, places I enjoy in Warrensburg, NY (pop 4,255).

This is an outstanding example of a community garden - The Town of Warrensburg's Community Garden is located on their main street.

Be like the Small Town USA!
