Palmetto Bay's own Alex Flinn has her latest YA Book - "Girls of Summer" has been released and is recommended reading for this summer. Entertainment Weekly calls it one of the 15 biggest (and best) reads for this summer.

See Entertainment online (EW.Com) The 15 biggest (and best) YA books of the summer, by David Canfield, June 12, 2019.  Girls of Summer is featured on page 3 of 17.

"Best known for her No. 1 best-selling phenomenon Beastly, Flinn returns with an infectiously lovely portrait of four girls who escape to the mountains over one long July, rediscovering their bonds and themselves in the process. ()"

As posted on Amazon:
Perfect for fans of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and To All the Boys I've Loved Before, this compelling contemporary novel is from Alex Flinn, the #1 New York Timesbestselling author of Beastly.
Four girls. One unforgettable July.

Britta is the bubbly drama queen. She needs to get away—and a peaceful cabin in the woods sounds like the perfect escape.
Meredith is the overachiever. She’s spent her entire life preparing for college, but at what cost? Now she’s wondering if that’s all there is.
Kate is the reluctant socialite. She’s searching for a reason to begin again after fleeing her small Georgia town—and a shameful family secret.
Spider is the quiet intellectual. She’s struggling with pain that has isolated her from her peers for much of her life.
When these four very different young women stay together for a month in the mountains, they discover that sometimes getting away from it all can only bring you back to who you really are.

Junior League of Miami - 2018 Annual Legislative Breakfast

It was my honor to represent Palmetto Bay at the 2018 Legislative Breakfast held on Wednesday, March 14, 2018. The event was held at their headquarters in Coral Gables.

I am familiar with this organization as my wife Alexandra spent some years as a member and volunteer with this organization. Discussions of the long-term programs brought back memories, such as assisting as Santa Claus at an Inn Transition Christmas event.  Good times serving for great causes. I look forward to the Junior League April event at Deering Estate: April 14 – when The Junior League of Miami plans to transform the historic Deering Estate for the 2018 Miami Showhouse; open to the public from April 14 – 29, 2018. (CLICK HERE) to view the official Junior League of Miami website release regarding this event.

The official Miami-Dade County News Release describes the April Miami Showhouse event as an event hosted by the Junior League of Miami to increase awareness and financial capability for the 91-year-old nonprofit organization to continue its work helping at-risk families in Miami.

The release notes further that: “The highly anticipated design event will inspire dozens of the most sought-after interior designers to temporarily transform interior and exterior spaces in the former home of industrial magnate Charles Deering. From April 14 to 29, the public will have the unique opportunity to explore the residence reinterpreted with modern touches in an estate dating back to 1916.”  Please (CLICK HERE) to view the full Miami-Dade News Release regarding this event.
I am a supporter of the outstanding work of the Junior League of Miami.

I also discussed a few of the issues important to Palmetto Bay that I am fortunate to sponsor/facilitate including School Safety, transportation, our efforts in recent legislative agenda, Parks and Parks programing, including our Community Center, as well as our progress on becoming an Age-Friendly City.

This event also provided me with time to meet (post event) with Coral Gables Mayor Raul Valdes-Fauli – we are in contact on numerous issues relating to school safety, traffic, FPL, development, and even coyotes.  More on that in another post. Discussions were also held with County Commissioner Sally Heyman on traffic, transit and animal issues.

Thank you to the leaders, members and supporters of the Junior League of Miami that allows the Junior League of Miami to do some any great things for our community.

Reflections on the 2016 Pinecrest/Palmetto Bay/Cutler Bay Relay for Life. Thank you ACS, participants, volunteers, Village and our YCIB

Alexandra and I had the honor to participate in the 2016 Pinecrest/Palmetto Bay/Cutler Bay Relay for life on Saturday, April 2nd. This year was particularly exciting for me as this marked the first year of participation for Palmetto Bay's first youth board, officially known as the "Youth Community Involvement Board" (YCIB). I have taken the liberty of posting various photographs taken throughout this day long event.

First of all: Congratulations to the Palmetto Bay YCIB's "Team Toby Keith" at our Relay for Life.  You all worked hard and were very successful in raising money.  Your booth was outstanding.  Each of you worked hard and took on significant responsibility to make this event a success.

I am so proud of all of you:  Agnes Bartha, Tatum Rivera, Patrick Barber, Jacob Dewitt, Jacob Tisthammer, Katie Signori, Charles Noguera, Alexander Santana, Mark Merwitzer, Jackson Ribler, and Valentina Maldonado.

Below: The event itself started at noon, kicking off with a Welcome Ceremony and the team lap.  It was great to see all of the different groups represented on the track, especially all of the school groups. Everyone then took their turns walking the relay while bands and other groups performed for the crowds.
Photos above from Team Toby Keith on the team walk!
The Team booth looked great - drinks and popcorn were sold to raise money for the cause. Council member Tin Schaffer (below left) was available to assist in the heavy lifting.

Below - YCIB member - parents including Lynn Signori and Heather Rivera.  Also Pictured Coral Reef Elementary PTA President Erica Watts (above left) and Alexandra Flinn (below right, far right).
Pinecrest (above left) and Cutler Bay (below) were well represented as were Howard Drive Elementary, with a booth (manned the entire event by their Principal) and Coral Reef Elementary including performances by their JV & Varsity Cheerleaders.

The most toughing moment came at 8 PM with the luminaria ceremony.  It is a humbling experience to read all of the names and messages surrounding the track.  Alexandra and I dedicated luminaria in honor of both our fathers, Rebecca Ribler, & Ofc Randy DiStefano. Seeing all of those individuals candles is always very moving for me.  As the American Cancer Society says, every candle has a name.  Thinking about all of the those families that have been affected by cancer in some way is just incredibly humbling.

It’s such a powerful reminder of why everyone is out there doing, working so hard to make a difference. YCIB member Jackson Ribler gave a moving tribute to his mother, Rebecca, who lost her battle with cancer coming up on one year this month.  I had the honor of knowing as well as working for and with his mother Rebecca Ribler.  Her husband Larry is pictured below, lighting a luminaria with son Jackson.
The photo above right does not do the justice to Jackson's tribute to his mother.  If anyone has a better photo, please send it to me.  Thank you Jackson for sharing what this event meant to you; how much you mother meant and thank you YCIB members for your support for Jackson.

A family book event to attend on Sat. Nov. 2nd, 1 PM. SCBWI LAUNCHES INTERNATIONAL "INSIDE STORY" PROGRAM

Here is a great event for book lovers tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 2, 1:00 PM at Books & Books I Coral Gables: The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, in conjunction with First Book, launches its first international "Inside Story" event at select independent bookstores.

Why go? You get to see numerous authors speak. Then there are the other big reasons – you both support independent booksellers and – AND – for every book sold as part event, a book will be donated to a needy child.

This event provides an opportunity for young readers, teachers, librarians, and children's book lovers to become acquainted with new releases. The group of authors and illustrators will have a brief time to share the "inside story" behind their 2012 or 2013 publications and support independent bookstores.

Featuring: Christina Diaz Gonzalez, Steven Dos Santos, Marianne Berkes, Sherry North Rauh, Jamie Engle, Alex Flinn, Lizette Lantigua, Tamera Wissinger, Gail Fay, and Peter Matthews give the "inside story" on their newest books.
