Politics and dogs are intertwined,

The friendship of a dog is precious. It becomes even more
so when one is so far removed from home….I have a

conversation coming back to war.

Lost pet? Act now. Time is of the essence. Please assist friends and neighbors reunite with their companion.

Pets are important. For some, their pet is everything. Pets depend upon their human companion.

Unfortunately, Business Is A-Boomin this time of year for animal shelters. This is no joke.

UPDATE (from reader Craig Merwitzer):
If a pet is not microchipped, get it done.  Any vet can do it. The microchip is useless unless registered.  The website used by most vets is homeagain.com
Also register with the information found on the tag issued by the county

CLICK HERE to view the Miami-Dade Animal Services lost pet page. As posted today, July 5, 2019, by Miami-Dade Animal Services:
Today is one of the busiest days of the year for animal shelters. If you lost your pet during yesterday’s festivities, here’s what you should do.
- Visit our adoption center on a daily basis. We receive about 80-100 dogs and cats every day. Our Lost and Found office will try to reunite you with your pet and will help you search for your pet in all areas of our facility.
- Use the Finding Rover app to upload a photo of your pet. This site uses facial recognition to reunite lost pets with their families.
- Register your lost pet on Petharbor.com and search through the photos of pets we have at our shelter.
- Post photos of your pet to Facebook, Nextdoor or other social media groups.
- Make flyers and post them around your neighborhood and at our adoption center.
- Check with other South Florida shelters, veterinarians and pet stores.
Please pass this information on to anyone who may have become separated from their pet. And please, keep an eye out and assist in reuniting any stray you may find. Not everyone has the same resources, the same ability to search for their lost pet. They may even not yet recognize that it is missing.

Thank you,

Eugene Flinn

A doggone good time! Dogs of Summer Adoption & Training Expo 2018

 “It's a party. A big Dog Party.”
― P.D. Eastman

Yes it was – until the rains came.

A great time was had by all.  The dogs had their day in Coral Reef Park on Saturday, June 23, 2018.  This was a Tri City event, sponsored by Miami-Dade County Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava, co-hosted by Mayors Eugene Flinn of Palmetto Bay, Joe Corradino of Pinecrest and Peggy Bell of Cutler Bay.  I have posted some pictures of this event below.  Thank you to our event partners, our Commissioner and the Parks & Rec Departments for Pinecrest

Miami-Dade Animal Services was present and provided free microchipping to the first 50 pets.  3 dogs were adopted at this rain-shortened event. Congrats.
Three large dogs were adopted out that this Dogs of Summer Adoption & Training Expo MDPD K-9 Unit put on a demonstration.  There was free microchipping for the first 50 dogs.
Lil Timmy and Bailey enjoyed their day out. We adopted Lil Timmy from Miami-Dade Animal Services.

A good day for Scooby - lost and reunited in Palmetto Bay - thanks to all who helped

Not all lost dogs situations result in a happy reuniting.  This one ended well.  I want to publicly thank those who assisted. I am posting this as it was yet a second example of "It Takes A Village" here in Palmetto Bay. There is much more to this story than a simply lost and returned dog. We are following up and doing what we can.  Please read on.

It started about noon on Sunday, May 6, 2018 when Code Enforcement officer Alan White found Scooby wandering a gas station off Franjo Road and 180th Street. The dog was very friendly, had a collar, but no tag. Ofc White indicated that the dog was very friendly and was even trying to jump into the truck.  We feared that the dog possibly had been dumped.

After discussions, Ofc White spoke with Carol at Paws 4 You Rescue to provide a safe temporary hold while we attempted to locate the owner – including through my social media.

I posted the photos (also posted here) in an attempt to locate the owner.  I want to thank everyone who followed up on trying to locate the owner. Thank you Sue Erhardt who saw the post and responded with the names for both the pet (Scooby) and pet owner’s (Ann – she will be identified solely by her first name) as well as the contact number.

I contacted Ann to tell her where her dog was. Ann advised that she has no transportation.  She is living apart from her dog due to her residing with a friend in an apartment that does not allow pets. This has required her to temporarily place Scooby with a friend here in Palmetto Bay.

I offered to go to Paws 4 You to pick up her dog and reunite everyone. I picked Scooby up from Paws 4 You, and drove him to pick up Ann, the plan being to return Scooby to his temporary home in Palmetto Bay.  Was Scooby happy to see Ann!  I also assisted Ann by placing the County Tags on Scooby’s collar as well as trying to assist in further securing his accommodations to prevent another wandering.

I want to thank Aubrey of Paws 4 You for taking great care of Scooby while at the kennel (Paws 4 You Rescue has a Kennel for private owners in addition to the Rescue operations). More on Paws 4 You at the bottom of this post.

Ann later told me that she is unable to have Scooby micro chipped at this time.  She is living apart from her dog as she is looking for accommodations that will allow her to remain with Scooby, her longtime companion.  I have referred Ann to our commissioner and they will work to see what can be accomplished for her.

I would like to see how we can get Scooby micro chipped.  Palmetto Bay has hosted the location for Miami-Dade County’s pet events.  Our Dogs of Summer Event of 2016 included free microchipping – I have not yet received confirmation as to whether this service will be offered in June, 2018 (collars come off, but properly registered microchips last for the life of your furry friend).

Thank you to:
Ofc. Alan White, Code Officer, Palmetto Bay
Everyone who participated in, including forwarding the Social Media search/posting
Sue Erhardt – who advised me of the name of Scooby, Ann and her contact number
Carol Caridad, Paws 4 You Rescue, Inc.
Aubrey (last name – omitted) Paws 4 You Rescue, Inc.
Ann's friends who are providing a place for Scooby this interim place to live.

This is a good time to mention that I am excited to once again partner with our County Commissioner on the 2018 Dogs of Summer event set for Coral Reef Park next month (June 23, 2018, beginning at 10:00 AM).

Please see my prior post of Saturday, July 16 - 10 am - 2 pm - Dogs Of Summer Training And Adoption Expo! Concerning the event I co-hosted, held jointly with Miami-Dade County Commissioner Levine Cava, Pinecrest, Cutler Bay and Palmetto Bay on Saturday, July 16 from 10 am - 2 pm  for the Dogs Of Summer Training And Adoption Expo!

Once again, don’t miss this pawesome  event and information workshop for you and your pup!

Finally, about Paws 4 You Rescue, Inc:
Paws 4 You Rescue, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit, volunteer, donor-subsidized animal rescue organization based in Miami, Florida.  Our top priority is to save dogs from euthanasia at Miami-Dade Animal Services, where more than 27,000 unwanted pets end up each year.
Rescued animals vary from being sick, injured, homeless and surrendered to simply lost. We give these animals a safe environment at our shelter, professional medical care, hope and lots of love. Our animals are sterilized, vaccinated and ID micro-chipped to prevent future loss.
Some require major surgery from a specialist to repair broken limbs while others may need additional rehabilitation time and specific medical care - ranging from respiratory illnesses and skin infections to cherry eyes and heartworm treatments.  Once Paws 4 You Rescue commits to helping an animal, we seek the best quality treatment available - taking no shortcuts.
Additionally, we believe in the value of education pertaining to the importance of spaying and neutering.  Pet overpopulation is a serious problem in our county and by sterilizing your pet, you help relieve the strain on Miami-Dade Animal Services and our community.

Again, thank you to all that help in distributing the social media posts, the identification of Scooby and owner Ann, making Scooby safe and being on the lookout for the benefit of friends, neighbors and pets!.  It really does take a village!

UPDATE - Condition of Moony, neighborhood cat injured by Dart. Opportunity to donate.

My heartfelt thanks again to those compassionate neighbors who helped out on the neighborhood cat named Moony.

Moony the cat is now resting comfortably in a local safe house located at an undisclosed location of Palmetto Bay (OK, its one of the worst kept 'secrets'.  The cat is with local pet rescue activist Cindy Hewitt).  The cat is still under care of Miami-Dade County Animal Services.

I visited Moony Sunday morning, March 11, 2018. Moony looked much better from the last time I saw him - when he still had the dart embedded in his head.

Cindy Hewitt has been fielding questions from many fellow residents about donating.  Cindy posted the following on the Facebook Page, Palmetto Bay's Lost and Found Animals:
In response to folks who have asked about donating towards Moony’s care: While there is no veterinary charge for Moony’s care, MDAS incurred veterinary & forensic expenses. If you want to support their efforts to sustain/increase the live release rate at the shelter (currently around 90% for both dogs & cats), the Animal Services Trust Fund accepts contributions (tax deductible). Checks should be made payable to Miami-Dade Animal Services with Animal Services Trust Fund on the memo line. Mailing address is 3599 NW 79 Ave Doral 33122. Contributions can also be made online at www8.miamidade.gov under the news and events tab, but I could only find a direct deposit form for county employees.
Or CLICK HERE for a link to the Animal Services page - scroll down for a link to report Animal Cruelty.  You can also CLICK HERE to go to a donation page.

Please do not forget our local animal rescue groups who work so hard to help our furry companions.  I will be posting updates in the future spotlighting these groups.

This case remains an open animal cruelty investigation.  Please see a prior post: March 9, 2018, Miami-Dade County, Village Policing Unit & Miami-Dade/Florida Keys Crime Stoppers are seeking your help. Neighborhood cat injured by dart

Thank you to everyone who has been so concerned and inquiring as to how they can help.

Dogs of Summer - a doggone good time - there were adoptions and microchipping - and fun!

It was a big dog party and a great dog party!

I want to officially thank Miami-Dade County Animal Services and our County Commissioner, Daniella Levine Cava, for a wonderful event - the Dogs of Summer:

Here are the results from the few hours this event was held:

ASD: 4 adoptions
Dogs in Crisis: 4 puppies, 1 adult dog and 1 cat
25 pets micro chipped
2 spay/neuter appointments made at the Humane Society
2 applications to foster dogs at This is the Dog organization

I am pleased that 25 more pets are now micro chipped - and the service was provided free of charge.  Registered microchips will make a huge difference in reuniting these pets should they ever become lost or stolen from their homes.

I look forward additional similar events at our parks - another outstanding example of tri-city collaboration with our County Commissioner.

Thank you to Commissioner Levine Cava, Pinecrest Mayor Cindy Lerner, Cutler Bay Mayor Peggy Bell and PBay council member Tin Schaffer who participated in this event.  Our very own adoptee Tim and our Bailey also participated along with my family.

Thank you everyone, the participants and event sponsors who worked to hard to make this event great.  Thank you to Gary Alan Ruse and the Community Newspapers for getting the word out and keeping our community informed.

Pets' Trust update - Mayor Stanczyk, It is time to publicly take a stand

CLICK HERE to view an important update from Michael Rosenberg, President, Pets’ Trust on the new format for South Dade Updates.

Yes, once again I am calling out current Palmetto Bay Shelley Stanczyk and calling upon her to get off the fence and take a positive stand.  Madam Mayor, you have attended the Pets' Trust events and participated in the Photo Ops. Now it is time to state your support publicly for the Pets' Trust.  Are you in or not?  Palmetto Bay is home to Friends Forever, Paws4You Rescue and The Cat Network (no slight intended to other groups, I just do not have your links) as well as a wonderful Dog Park I was proud to participate in its design and development, to see it come on line when I was Mayor of Palmetto Bay. Members of these groups work hard for an outstanding and important cause. It is time to provide some support to them.

Mr. Rosenberg congratulates the Pinecrest Mayor, calling for "a big round of applause for Mayor Cindy Lerner who has created a wonderful letter that is going to all the Mayors of Dade County asking for support.  Thank you Cindy.  Let’s get ALL the Mayors to sign your letter."

We are getting close to the straw vote. It is time for action.  I request that Mayor Stanczyk participate at minimum by signing the letter and propose further that the entire council pass a resolution affirming that you recommend support for the Pets' Trust.  The October council meeting is the last regular council meeting prior to the straw vote to be taken at the November election. Technically there is the November meeting, but it may be cancelled due to the election the next day.  This is your last opportunity to get off the fence and take a stand.  Do it!
