Independence Day - celebrated in the Village of Parks Day events I - III

July 4th holiday was celebrated in Palmetto Bay. Here are some photos that document some of the very festive day.  It started early.

Wednesday, July 4, 2018

Dear Fellow Palmetto Bay resident,

July 4, 1776, the date our county's founders declared our independence from Britain, the date we marks as the day that American Democracy was born. There are many great neighborhood and regional events going on (some including Mangowood and American Legion Post 133 are listed below) so plan ahead, have fun and stay safe!

This is a holiday to celebrate, the day we celebrate the birth of our great nation, the creation of the greatest system of freedom and democracy. All of this occurred due to the great physical and financial sacrifice of the founders of this nation, the brave men and women of yesterday and today who have sacrificed so greatly to ensure the traditions bestowed by our remarkable founders. We owe them vigilance, and the willingness to defend the democracy they have passed on to us.

Independence Day has been celebrated since 1776.  But do you know the year that July 4 was officially made a Federal Holiday?  Would you believe 1941? Check out the  History.com page regarding July 4, for additional information.

Let us continue to look to a future that belongs to all of us - a future that 'we, the people' have the power to create.

I wish you all a wonderful holiday, and hope that the day's happiness reminds us all of the importance of the Fourth of July.

As always, I am available to discuss this and any other matters with you.  eflinn@palmettobay-fl.gov or 305-302-3713.

Your Mayor,

Eugene Flinn

MAYOR FLINN'S SPECIAL NOTE: The American Legion has been very accommodating and welcoming to our Palmetto Bay community. The membership of the American Legion has been working hard to raise money for a much needed roof.  The American Legion would appreciate donations to their building fund.  Contact me for more information, or the American Legion, Post 133, directly if you would like to donate/help.

I also want to publicly acknowledge and thank Council Member Singer and his family, along with Laurel Auberbacher, who purchase the food at their own personal expense as well as actually cook and serve breakfast every other Sunday at the American Legion (breakfast is served every Sunday), which serves as a fundraiser for the Post expenses, e.g., the building/roof fund. (CLICK HERE)

Breakfast runs in the $5-6 range. Breakfast, open to the public, runs on Sunday and is open it the public from 8:30 AM to 10 AM.

Public Services Team hard at work on next step forward - safety lighting at the Mangowood crosswalk

1:30  PM Update:  Detour had ended by 1:00 PM.  It doesn't look like much.  I am going to wait to see how these first-step crosswalk lights look in the evening.
11:00 AM original post: Detours going on mid day on Tuesday, May, 15, 2018, in Mangowood - at 82nd Avenue and 148th Street.  Work is going on - permanent solar powered LED lighting is being placed in the road to illuminate the crosswalk in the evenings.

See a prior post of Oct. 25, Mangowood Crosswalk - updates - potential modifications presented to area stakeholders

I am committed to introducing the same successful improvements made to this crosswalk to other crosswalks within our Village.  Consider this the "pilot" program.

We are waiting upon final approval for the complete plans.  There are additional items, including additional yellow flashers, signage and other cross alert flashers that are being prepared for placement into this crosswalk.

I will continue to keep everyone advised.

Your Mayor,

Eugene Flinn

Mangowood Crosswalk - updates - potential modifications presented to area stakeholders

Update on the Mangowood 148 Drive / 82nd Avenue crosswalk.  Proposals presented to area stakeholders at a meeting held on Tuesday, October 25, 2016, in Mangowood.
See: October 19, 2016, Photo of the day - Mangowood Crosswalk - documenting another step in safety. Note that we are not yet complete. for prior updates - part of ongoing updates on events and projects going on within the village of Palmetto Bay.

The prior photos were actual recent additions to the Mangowood crosswalk (82nd Avenue at 148th) that were taken October 19, 2016.  These photos demonstrate the next step in safety.

These photos represent proposals and not the finished project. This meeting is one of many, not the sole, definitive meeting.  I am always available to meet and discuss issues such as these. You can reach me via e-mail: eflinn@palmettobay-fl.gov or cell: (305) 302-3713.

Thank you,

Photo of the day - Mangowood Crosswalk - documenting another step in safety. Note that we are not yet complete.

Two photos from the recent additions to the Mangowood crosswalk (82nd Avenue at 148th) that were taken Wednesday, October 19, 2016.  These photos demonstrate the next step in safety.  Please note that this does not represent a completion of the sidewalk process.  Please also take note that I would like to see this same modification, notification, at ALL crosswalks located within our Village of Palmetto Bay.

We continue to work to make our pedestrian walkways safer and more complete.  Additional work that I would like to see include the crosswalk warning flashers (see the ones installed at 80th and 168th Street as well as 163rd and 82nd Avenue) and possibly LED lights embedded in the road surface, such as can been seen at the crosswalks at Miami International Airport.
