How long was this drought? It predates World War II.
Most, if not all, of the current player’s
parents were not even born yet. The last English player to win Wimbledon was Fred
Perry who won three consecutive Wimbledon Championships from 1934 to 1936 and
was World No. 1.
Fred Perry was also the
last British player to win any of the Men's singles Grand Slam titles until Andy
Murray won the 2012 US Open.
Fred Perry did not live to see the next Englishman win Wimbledon,
passing away in 1995. That is a very long time between Englishmen
prevailing on home turf.
